I leave this week to move to Colorado (in between Boulder and Denver)! I’ve been thinking about it since last year. I’ve visited Colorado three times, the last visit in September 2024, but haven’t spent much time in Denver. I make new friends pretty easily and am looking forward to being around more like-minded people (less conservative and more active). Living somewhere that has such beauty, I won’t feel the need to go on long trips multiple times a year. I listed my Condo in late May and it sold in four days. The bathroom remodels, granite/backsplash in the kitchen, and new HVAC definitely paid off.

Within two weeks I sold/gave away everything that didn’t fit in my SUV. Every piece of furniture, wall art, rugs, etc. and half of my clothing. My sectional sofa was expensive and only sixteen months old, but I’m not letting material possessions keep me from pursuing a dream for the final chapter of my life.

It was scary and outside of my comfort zone, especially when you’re in your mid 60’s, but I’ve embraced it and feel free…free from “things” that tie you down. Of course I like my creature comforts. I’ll be staying for at least six months with a family in a separate wing of their home. I’ve spoken with the husband a couple of times (zoom call) and he seems smart, ambitious, generous, and kind. They have a tween daughter, two dogs, a cat, and guinea pigs. I offered to watch the animals in August while they’re on a trip. Their reviews on Airbnb are excellent. My bedroom has a large flat screen television, a king size bed that has a remote to move the head up, etc., and a beautiful lake to view. I also have a sunroom with a couch, dining table, refrigerator, micro, and a 2nd bedroom with a couple of twin beds and lots of shelving, etc. Of course I’ll have use of their gorgeous kitchen and I have a garage also. I’ve had a garage since my 30’s and with the Colorado winters, I really wanted one.
I wouldn’t be moving if my son and husband were still alive. But, they’re not.

In addition to all of the selling and packing, I made tons of phone calls and online changes for my address and banking. The process of deciding what to keep and what to give away or sell has been arduous. A few weeks ago I did a trial run and packed most of the things I decided to keep. I put my winter things and some bedding in vacuum bags and loaded my vehicle (my back hurt for a while after that)…

I didn’t want to block my view. I’ll also have my e-bike on the back. I want to squeeze my new vacuum and outdoor folding chair in (think Beverly Hillbillies) 🙂 I’ll make two overnight stops on the way out…St. Louis and Kansas.
I’ve been researching things to do in Denver, Boulder, Golden, and have a long list of hiking, cycling, museums, botanic gardens, etc. I already have three overnight trips planned for Autumn… Estes Park, Crested Butte, and Steamboat Springs. I also joined some Meetup events and will hit the ground running. I chose some new doctors and have a primary care doctor appointment scheduled, and of course a hair appointment.

Please be brave with your life, before you know it, it’s over. I’m sure my parents, husband, and son are proud of me!
Hope the move-in process goes smoothly 🙂 CO is fantastic!

I’ve been here for a week, it’s been great! I used to ski here back in the ’80s and I’ve been here numerous times in the summer. I love Colorado!

How wonderful Sherry! I was born and grew up in Boulderin the 60’s and 70’s. Although I have been in the south for many years, and i love it here, Colorado will always have my heart. Hope you find happiness and contentment.

Once again we are of parallel minds. I am moving as well. I have been terrified and second guessing myself since I made the rather spontaneous decision and put a deposit on my new place. I wasn’t even looking and had not even considered moving at that point. My biggest thing was that I was moving somewhere My Paul had never been. It feels very much like I am leaving him behind. So, I appreciate what you wrote about your move and find inspiration in your words. The second biggest concern is the purging. What was the word you used? “Arduous”. Yeah, that works.

Wow, that’s exciting! Is it far from where you live now? Yes, the purging can be quite an ordeal, but luckily I was pretty much a minimalist any way.

It’s not too far from here. Right now I live in a little village called Stevensville and I am moving to another little village called Crystal Beach. I had a little place there back in the 90’s and was very happy there even though I was going through breast cancer at the time. I was walking on the beach one day and ran into my old landlord. We had a bit of a catchup and told him about Paul and Andrew. We said our good byes and I turned to leave, then turned back and asked him if he had anything available. He did and took me to see it right away. My boss says it’s serendipity. She might be right.
I have no problem purging my stuff. It’s Paul’s things I am still clinging to. It has only been 8 months since I lost him. I’m getting better at it, though.

I do believe that the universe conspires to help us do what’s best for ourselves. Everything has come together for my move. My place and furnishings sold quickly. I hope you’re very happy there! 🤗
