Party in the Park in Cincinnati

Cincinnati has a weekly event during the spring/summer called Party in the Park.  It’s located downtown, on the Ohio River.  I usually attend a once or twice during the summer, but I’ve already been twice this year!  They always have a band and stage set up in the grass and there’s usually a nice crowd, including families and people of all ages.  As you can see from the photograph below, people arrive by boat also!

Hiking Dayton, Kentucky

Saturday I went on a three-mile hike with my hiking club through Meetup.com in Dayton, Kentucky, which is located along the Ohio River, across from Cincinnati.  It has finally started to warm up some and the sun was shining!  We split into a faster group and a slower group.  I’m always in the fast group, but wanted time to take photos…so I joined the slower group.  In this photo you can see the faster group up ahead…

From Covington to Newport, Kentucky

My exploration of Covington, Kentucky ended at a restaurant along the Ohio River, meeting a girlfriend for a drink, before heading home.  The Cincinnati skyline was beautiful…

Photo Shopping in Covington, Kentucky

Yesterday, I explored Covington, Kentucky, which is located right across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio!  In the area called MainStrasse Village, I found princesses and fairies at Stoney’s Gifts, where the owner Sandi Stonebraker has created a magical shop.  She and I chatted for a while…about travel, art, and photography, but I forgot to ask her if she painted the paintings in the shop.  I believe she did!  They are whimsical and fun.

Smoke on the Water

Leaving my house thirty minutes earlier than necessary to meet friends for lunch yesterday, I had enough time to take photos of the Ohio River and the Downtown area of Cincinnati from the Kentucky side.

I didn’t expect the beautiful fog.  I live 35-40 minutes from Downtown and as I crossed a bridge into Kentucky, I had to pull over on the Highway to take a photograph.

After arriving in Newport, Kentucky, I walked on to the Purple People Bridge, which is a pedestrian only bridge.

I have some lovely shots of Cincinnati Street Art for tomorrow!  Hope you have a wonderful day!

The Quaint Rivertown of Ripley, Ohio

I had another adventure yesterday!  My girlfriend Gina texted me in the morning and asked what I was doing.  I told her about my plan to drive to Higginsport, Ohio–along the Ohio River–to look at something I’m thinking of buying.  (I’ll tell you tomorrow what it is!  We all need a little mystery or intrigue in our lives).  Anyway…so I picked her up and we drove an hour to check the mystery item out.  It was another absolutely beautiful day!

This was the view…

Gina brought a picnic lunch for us…so I spread a blanket out by the river and we enjoyed the food and view.

I’ve discovered I can get this effect (sparkling diamonds in the water) when I take the photo towards the sun!

The very cute town of Ripley, Ohio is located 7 miles down the road from Higginsport.  Since it was a weekday, there weren’t many people around.

This is called “Snappers Saloon”.  It has a view of the river and was decorated quite festively!

I love when people paint their businesses or houses unusual colors!

More views of the Ohio River…

It seems every town I’m visiting has a flag on display.  The sun was behind the cloud on this one…

To satisfy the door fetish in me and you…

Life isn’t complete without flowers!

Gina wanted an ice cream, so we went into Rockin’ Robin’s Soda Shoppe.  I was SO excited when I saw the interior!  I loved the 50’s look and the details were amazing!

My “artsy” shot…

In case you’re wondering…I had the Moosetracks flavor and Gina had the Cookies n Cream!

On the drive back, which is along the Ohio River on Route 52, I did a drive by shooting of Ulysses S. Grant’s birthplace in Point Pleasant, Ohio.

We were going to grill steaks and have asparagus, but when we arrived to Gina’s house…decided to get in the hot tub with a glass of wine!  That soaked the motivation right out of us to cook.  She had leftover Chili…so we feasted on that instead.  Another great day in Ohio!!

The Germania Society – Cincinnati’s Original Oktoberfest

Yesterday was a fun packed day!  We started by going boating on the Ohio River.  Our boat is old — but it’s fast and fun!  Kinda like us!  I prefer to boat and slalom-ski on the river rather than one of the area lakes because it’s less crowded and the scenery is better.  We’ve been boating on the river for 20 years.  This is in the New Richmond area.

Some of the towns along the river are quaint and picturesque…

We didn’t stay out long because we had plans to go to the Germania Society’s Oktoberfest on the West side of town and meet friends there.  Cincinnati has a large percentage of German heritage residents.  I’ve been to the Oktoberfest that’s held in Downtown Cincinnati quite a few times, but never to this one.  I actually enjoyed it more than the Downtown event.  We hopped on our Harley motorcycle (thank goodness because there were so many people there, you had to park a mile away if you arrived by car) and enjoyed a beautiful ride there.  Randy’s holding my Warsteiner beer (he’s not a lush)…we only drank one…they’re so big!  I’m usually not a beer drinker (I prefer wine) but I really enjoyed this beer and when in Rome!

Prost!

Here’s our friend Richard on the left – he’s 6’9″ tall (just like my son) – and doesn’t he look so German and handsome!  The other people are strangers that I requested a photo from…

I went off of my Paleo Plan and had a bratwurst, a few potato pancakes and a funnel cake (that I didn’t get a photo of because I was too intent on eating it)!

Some of the traditional games were there…including “The Rat Game”….nothing like betting on rat races!

There were rides…

Alpine Horn Blowing…

I liked the look of these flags under the large tent…

I love the atmosphere once it’s dark…all of the lights are twinkling and anything is possible!

I’m glad we were able to go to a festival type event this summer!  Hope you enjoyed coming along!!

It’s Alive!

I can scratch off another experience from my bucket list…a Segway tour!  It was fun…a bit dangerous…and we had a beautiful day for it.  I took my son, whom I infrequently do anything with and he loved it.  There were six people on the tour of Eden Park in Cincinnati.  After a 20 minute lesson…we were off.  Up and down hills…along skinny sidewalks with steep drop offs…and even off-road.

I had to laugh watching the tour guide give Justin his lesson…she was about 5’4″ and in comparison to his 6’9″ frame…it was quite comical!

Unfortunately, a couple in their late 50’s or early 60’s fell off of their Segway a number of times.  Luckily only their pride was injured.  They are quite tricky – when you step on or off…they sense your presence and react by moving.

The mighty “Ohio River” was sparkling in the sunlight!

“Twin Lakes” were very tranquil.  I haven’t been to Eden Park in many years.

We sat outside in Mt. Adams for a late lunch afterwards and went shopping afterwards.  It was a great day.  I’m blessed to have a wonderful son to spend time with!

Hope your day was great too!!
