Meet Sherry

1203211925c

Looking back, my decision to resign from a traditional 8 to 5 job to take care of my mother, was the beginning of a wonderful chapter in my life! Working in the corporate world for 30 years and raising a son left little time to discover my likes/dislikes. I soon discovered that traveling is in my blood (I’ve moved over 40 times) and have been fortunate to be able to explore more than 60 countries, via Couchsurfing, Airbnb, VRBO, and some of the more conventional ways.

Starting my own meetup, “Travel Spirit Meetup”, enabled me to take over 20 people through 24 countries in Europe and Central America between 2014 and 2016! I’ve had time to take some photography classes and was a Photographer and Travel Writer for Cincinnati Refined for five years, in addition to taking senior, family, real estate and other types of photographs through my own business. I started a business in 2016 taking people on tours of Cincinnati and by 2019 had hired seven freelance Tour Guides and was #1 on Trip Advisor! Since the pandemic hit, I’ve dissolved the company and am now retired.

Teaching myself how to use Lightroom, making over 250 new Recipes in 18 months, and starting this blog which now has over 5,000 followers have been a few of my accomplishments. Hiking solo to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, finishing my first half marathon, hiking for over 3 days in Peru to Machu Picchu, sky diving, and traveling over 5,000 miles in an Overland Truck through six African countries, camping most of the way are a few more.

I’m a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army for four years, stationed in Germany for the majority of that time and have my B.A. in Business from the University of Texas at Dallas.

I live in Northern Kentucky, having moved from a country setting in Northern Cincinnati in 2019 after my husband passed away. My only child passed away in 2019, a year after my husband. I know they want me to be happy and to continue living life with as much enthusiasm and wonder as before.

Your visits are my reward.

I prefer not to accept awards…thank you for the thought!

  11. Very cool blog Sherry! You’ve been to so many of the places we have, and so many more we want to travel to in the future. I LOVED your shot of Deadvlei in the Namib… ‘I’m officially a photographer’. We were there in 2008 during a 6 month backpacking tour of southern Africa and this was before I had really started to think about the elements of a good shot, including the emotional link. You certainly captured it with that shot – good for you and I’m looking forward to exploring your work and getting to know you better.

      • Hi Sherry…thanks for your kind words – I only wish I had discovered my passion for photography a few years ago instead of in my 40’s! That said – looking at your inspirational 50’s activities leads me to believe there are many, many great photo opportunities still to be had!

I haven’t tried to sell any of my shots at this point. I’ve traded with a couple of people I know for services and will be doing some volunteer work. I’d like to eventually get into paid photography assignments but I have a very demanding “day job”, so being cautious not to over-comit at this point in time but trying to build my skills. I’ve seen some folk on the WordPress blog network providing links to ‘Smug Mug’ and ‘Esty’ so you may want to consider that?

Looking forward to seeing more of your great work!

Love it, and you are a great testimony to a favourite saying of mine…”those that don’t think it can be done shouldn’t bother the person doing it…”

Look forward to trying to keep up with your adventures!

  15. I enjoyed reading your profile; we share much in common in our backgrounds. I also come from a dysfunctional family, went to school while working full time, had kids, got a divorce, etc. I’m exploring my 50’s also, can’t travel as much as you but have found my favorite place in the world, (Big Bear Lake, CA) where we have a vacation home and plan to retire. I have been on the hunt for blogs that speak to me, whose authors seem like someone I’d like to share a cup of coffee with; you definitely fit the bill! Your blog is interesting and the pictures beautiful!

  16. Hi Sherry,
Before you buy a teardrop, I hope you’ll consider this suggestion. For the same kind of money, you could have your feet on the floor when you want. Stand up, even, stove, sink, refrigerator, closet, TWO double beds, big enough for someone 6’2″ tall, two comfortable chairs, table, storage, and more. Also, two fewer tires to replace. You can camp not only in WalMart parking lots, but on city streets and in national parks and on BLM lands. You would always have everything with you, can park anywhere, including regular parking spaces, metered or not, etc.

and see what I’m talking about. It would be ideal for a trip like you’re considering. Besides, when you’re finished with it, if you ever are, you can probably sell it for what you paid for it!

I started this because I have a similar philosophy to your tagline; life is about experiences! Your blog is very inspiring and I’m glad I stumbled upon it.
