Meet Sherry

Looking back, my decision to resign from a traditional 8 to 5 job to take care of my mother, was the beginning of a wonderful chapter in my life! Working in the corporate world for 30 years and raising a son left little time to discover my likes/dislikes. I soon discovered that traveling is in my blood (I’ve moved over 40 times) and have been fortunate to be able to explore more than 60 countries, via Couchsurfing, Airbnb, VRBO, and some of the more conventional ways.

Starting my own meetup, “Travel Spirit Meetup”, enabled me to take over 20 people through 24 countries in Europe and Central America between 2014 and 2016! I’ve had time to take some photography classes and was a Photographer and Travel Writer for Cincinnati Refined for five years, in addition to taking senior, family, real estate and other types of photographs through my own business. I started a business in 2016 taking people on tours of Cincinnati and by 2019 had hired seven freelance Tour Guides and was #1 on Trip Advisor! Since the pandemic hit, I’ve dissolved the company and am now retired.

Teaching myself how to use Lightroom, making over 250 new Recipes in 18 months, and starting this blog which now has over 5,000 followers have been a few of my accomplishments. Hiking solo to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, finishing my first half marathon, hiking for over 3 days in Peru to Machu Picchu, sky diving, and traveling over 5,000 miles in an Overland Truck through six African countries, camping most of the way are a few more.

I’m a Veteran having served in the U.S. Army for four years, stationed in Germany for the majority of that time and have my B.A. in Business from the University of Texas at Dallas.

I live in Northern Kentucky, having moved from a country setting in Northern Cincinnati in 2019 after my husband passed away. My only child passed away in 2019, a year after my husband. I know they want me to be happy and to continue living life with as much enthusiasm and wonder as before.

Your visits are my reward.

I prefer not to accept awards…thank you for the thought!

  1. Looking back on an old post from Budapest reminded me that at one stage we were following each other’s stories. You have had some heart- wrenching tragedies since those days, but at the same time you are the definition of “triumph over adversity”. Well done, you.

I’m in the middle of planning a six-week trip to the States. It will be a case of us “seeing what we see”. But I am sure it will also expose us to lots of new experiences. We are about to put our faith in Amtrak 🙂

    • Thank you, Gwendoline, It’s been a long journey. I’m not sure I would do Amtrak, it’s not the greatest. Are you not able to rent a car? It would be less expensive and you could see a lot more. If you need some advice, I’m available.

      • Driving is certainly an option. We did that back in 2018, going up the Pacific 101 from San Francisco to Astoria and then across to Portland and Seattle.
However, we have settled on the train for a number of reasons. Firstly, we enjoy trains. Then there is the ability to relax when we want, and on top, the opportunity to meet and converse with locals.
In fact, we wouldn’t be doing this particular itinerary if it wasn’t on account of the train.
We will be in SF in order for me to be my friend’s “bridesmaid”. Then, rather than fly straight home to Australia, we are heading off on the Great American Southern Trail package: Los Angeles >San Antonio>New Orleans>Atlanta>Washington>New York. We get off the train and stay in hotels at each of those places, and I am extending the standard offering in most of those. Then Boston and a side trip to Niagara Falls before flying home from Boston via a short break in Honolulu.

I am struggling with a reasonably priced hotel in New York for 7 nights, and how to do the trip to Niagara Falls from Boston. If you have any advice on that (or the other things I have mentioned) I am very happy to receive it.
But coming back to the train idea. I realise Amtrak will not compare to European trains. And I’ve read some awful reviews about the customer service in the dining cars. But our Australian trains are not any better, and unless you are on the privately owned Indian Pacific or Ghan, they don’t even have a dining car. So our expectations are not high. And the “see what we see” comment was a reference to the great distances and variety of stopovers. While I have us 4/5 nights in several places it will never be enough time.
There’s also a side trip from SF to near Eugene in Oregon to visit another blogging friend. I’m planning to fly up from SF, then get on the train in Eugene for the southbound leg to Los Angeles. We’ll certainly have given Amtrak a workout at the end of it all 🙂

      • That sounds like a good plan. I typically use Airbnb. I’m headed to Puerto Rico in about a month for a month. I’ll be staying in airbnb’s. I also have a trip on the East Coast planned in late spring for 3 weeks. I’ll be doing a solo road trip and one of my stops is about 30 minutes north of New York City at an Airbnb. What month will you be traveling or season?

      • Some of my Australian friends have reported problems with booking US Airbnbs well in advance. In popular places the owners like to hedge their bets on getting a long stay like yours, rather than 4-7 nights which may leave them with a vacancy either side. So I’m happy to leave the hotels with Amtrak/Railbookers and their preferential rates. Except I thought I had a problem with that in NY – but I think they have resolved that today.
We’ll be in USA from 23rd April through to first week of June. Spring should be nice I’m told. New York will be the last week in May.

      • I’ve stayed at hundreds of Airbnbs for 1-3 night stays with no problems. Ironically, the only cancellation was in Miami, Florida, where I booked a month stay and she cancelled. I used to be an Airbnb host and you’re penalized if you cancel. Maybe it didn’t used to be like that. I’m glad it’s being resolved. I’ll be at the New York Botanical Gardens on May 23rd and then staying at an Airbnb for one night ½ hr. north of there on my way to Lake Placid. Have a great trip!

  2. I love reading about “traveling”, even though it basically makes me jealous. I have no desire to LIVE anywhere besides where I do, basically, but I LOVE to travel.

  5. Sherry, you continue to amaze me! After reading about all you do, I just might have to go take a nap. Over 4500 followers? Four years of daily posts of my paintings, and I could only come up with fewer than 200.

  6. Hi Sherry – what a great idea for a blog.

I am looking to get into real estate photography. I have a great and expensive Nikon that I love but rarely use because I too am part of the 9-6 Corporate rat race. While I love my work, I am looking to do something more creative and fun, and hopefully earn a decent side living until I can make it a more full-time reality! My question for you: how did you break into real estate photography? Did you take classes and if so, what kind? Have you earned significant money doing this? …that was more like 3 questions, but really, any guidance you can offer would be terrific! I hope to hear from you.

Best wishes in your new career and safe travels…not to mention, Happy Holidays!

    • Hi Bianca…My brother’s wife is a real estate agent. I think networking is the best way. Contact real estate companies. As far as money…I’ve only had two jobs in that area, but combined with everything else I do, it’s enough for now. Hope to grow though. Good luck and happy holidays to you also!

  7. Yesterday I stumbled upon your blog and read through some of your interesting posts. You write good and the photos in your blog are spectacular. But the thing that suprised me is, Well, you have travelled in 42 countries around the world! is this correct? I can’t even imagine that. It must be a mind opening experience. You sure are a free spirited woman. Thanks for replying to my earlier comment, by the way.
