End of Summer

This weekend has been wonderful!  Saturday we started the day with our usual three-mile trail jog at the nature center.  There were beautiful wildflowers weeds everywhere, so I picked some to bring home.  Breakfast was a yummy smoothie with strawberries, banana, Greek yogurt, coconut milk, oatmeal flakes, honey, 1 cup of ice, and some Chia Seeds.  I discovered the Chia Seeds at Trader Joe’s and was impressed by the amount of fiber, Omega 3, and Protein in 1 tablespoon!

That afternoon we rode the Harley to the Milford Street Festival.  We stopped along the way because Randy wanted a photo with this tank…

We stayed at the festival for about an hour and stopped by the booth of one of Randy’s friends…Steve Black…who makes cool jewelry out of spoons and forks.  A lot of the pieces are Harley and breast cancer (ribbon) related.

There were a variety of booths including face painting…

This parrot was cool…

We stopped in a gun shop and I thought this would make an artsy photo…

And this wall looked cool.  The three different colors and textures really popped!

We rushed home, changed clothes and left for our next adventure…Bob’s Pig Roast.  It was in honor of his deceased wife who had died from cancer.  Everyone donated $10 to the American Cancer Society…so $2700 was collected!

This is Bob…

I took about 150 photos, but picked out just a few to post.  This is my friend Shari.  I took 7 photos of her with my flash on and she blinked every single time.  So I turned the flash off and…voila…

This was the beginning of the party…before most of the group arrived.  The port-o-lets were for the guys and the inside restrooms were for the ladies.

Randy, Frank and I were toasting with three different beverages in a wine glass.  Wine for me, beer for Randy and water for Frank!

It was a busy and FUN day!  I’m grateful we have so many nice friends!  We’ve had beautiful weather, but it is cooling off this week.  Hope your weekend was great and wishing you a wonderful week!!

xoxoxo

Country Roads Take Me Home

Randy and I took a beautiful motorcycle ride last night.  He drives and I ride on the back…didn’t want to mislead you into thinking we have two!  Although it was hot during the day, because of the low humidity, the evening was chilly.

I told him I’d like to ride around and take some photos…so we rode for about two hours on country roads.  I wasn’t able to get him to stop for some of the photo ops…it was tricky on the roads…also having to turn around too much.

Something I find interesting is that when other people are driving, I get a little nervous and am quite the back seat driver, but when we’re on the motorcycle I feel really comfortable.  I feel a sense of freedom…and I tend to live more in the moment…experiencing the sights, sounds and sensations.

First we rode to a covered bridge that is shut down for repairs.  I would’ve taken a photo of the front, but there was a big ugly sign on it stating that…so here’s a photo of the inside…

This barn caught my attention…love the blue!

I like old barns…

This was a cute homestead…

It was starting to get dark…

I thought you might enjoy this photo I captured the other morning of an owl in the backyard…

Anyway, we ended up riding to a bar called “Plain Folks” that’s located in Pleasant Plain, Ohio, and met our neighbor there.  I didn’t take my camera in…but it’s a really cool place.  It used to be a school house and last night was “open mic night”.  Some really talented people sang and played guitars.  Everything from “On the Cover of the Rolling Stones” to “Take a Load Off Fanny”.  For being out in the middle of no-where, the clientele aren’t your typical “redneck” country folk.

We’re trying to get out and enjoy the weather before the rain starts Saturday!

Taste of Blue Ash and 38 Special

Yesterday was another busy day.  We started with a 3 mile hike at Long Branch Farm & Trails.  I love to trail jog and hike there because it’s only 5 minutes from my house and it’s lovely!  First we hook Jake up in the back of the truck where he proceeds to whine and howl the entire way because he’s so excited…

Next we enter our enchanted forest…

We follow along the trail feasting our eyes on all of the nature…

Cross over some creeks or in Jake’s case — wade through them…

Emerge into a clearing….

Take a peek inside the corn fields…

Do a hand stand because I can…

After a quick shower…it was time to hop on the Harley and take the back roads to the beautiful suburb of Cincinnati called Blue Ash.  Every year they have an event called the Taste of Blue Ash that lasts the entire weekend with well-known musicians, lots of food and plenty of people watching!  And it’s free!

Of course, I went off of my Paleo Plan again and had a pulled pork bbq sandwich and some fried pickles…

The bandstand…

People watching…

My girlfriends April and Anne and Chris…

This balloon was way way way up in the sky…

The band “38 Special” sounded great and they had all different colored lights…but the blue were my favorite…

My friend Frank…

We had a great time!  Hope you’re getting out and enjoying life (especially free events)!!

The Germania Society – Cincinnati’s Original Oktoberfest

Yesterday was a fun packed day!  We started by going boating on the Ohio River.  Our boat is old — but it’s fast and fun!  Kinda like us!  I prefer to boat and slalom-ski on the river rather than one of the area lakes because it’s less crowded and the scenery is better.  We’ve been boating on the river for 20 years.  This is in the New Richmond area.

Some of the towns along the river are quaint and picturesque…

We didn’t stay out long because we had plans to go to the Germania Society’s Oktoberfest on the West side of town and meet friends there.  Cincinnati has a large percentage of German heritage residents.  I’ve been to the Oktoberfest that’s held in Downtown Cincinnati quite a few times, but never to this one.  I actually enjoyed it more than the Downtown event.  We hopped on our Harley motorcycle (thank goodness because there were so many people there, you had to park a mile away if you arrived by car) and enjoyed a beautiful ride there.  Randy’s holding my Warsteiner beer (he’s not a lush)…we only drank one…they’re so big!  I’m usually not a beer drinker (I prefer wine) but I really enjoyed this beer and when in Rome!

Prost!

Here’s our friend Richard on the left – he’s 6’9″ tall (just like my son) – and doesn’t he look so German and handsome!  The other people are strangers that I requested a photo from…

I went off of my Paleo Plan and had a bratwurst, a few potato pancakes and a funnel cake (that I didn’t get a photo of because I was too intent on eating it)!

Some of the traditional games were there…including “The Rat Game”….nothing like betting on rat races!

There were rides…

Alpine Horn Blowing…

I liked the look of these flags under the large tent…

I love the atmosphere once it’s dark…all of the lights are twinkling and anything is possible!

I’m glad we were able to go to a festival type event this summer!  Hope you enjoyed coming along!!

“In a Pickle Bag”

I came across a website “In A Pickle” from Pinterest that sells small bags that contain most things you would need if you ever find yourself “in a pickle” and thought it was a great idea, so I made my own.

My bag contains some of the same items theirs do but I customized mine to suit me.  I often carry some of these items around in my purse anyway, but I like having them in this clear bag that I bought at a pharmacy for $8.  It opens into two separate compartments.  It will be great for travel!  Here’s a list to give you some ideas of what to put into yours, if you decide to make one:

Travel size mouth wash – toothpaste – dental floss – hand lotion – mineral powder & brush – rubber bands – hair bands – bobby pins – post it notes & pen – eye drops – spray pen hand sanitizer – pill-box – ear plugs – band aids – pocket knife with cork screw – facial cleansing towelettes – matches – q-tips – cotton balls – mini perfume – paper clips – safety-pin – mini sewing kit

Yesterday, I spent the day with my girlfriend Dee and we went out to lunch – shopping – and to happy hour.  The funny thing is that I never carry around a sewing kit and the skirt I had on ripped while we were shopping so my bag came in handy!  I spent more than I anticipated on some Lancome facial moisturizer, Armani perfume and a Yves Saint Laurent highlighter pencil.  We have to treat ourselves sometimes!

I’ve done really well with the Paleo Plan this past week – although at lunch with Dee I did have a sandwich that came on a pretzel bun.  It’s O.K. to treat yourself every now and then!  (Didn’t I just say that?)

Here’s a photo of Dee, another friend Shari and myself at Happy Hour.  My other girlfriend Cindy stopped by for a glass of wine, but I didn’t get a photo…

I thought my Olympus PEN camera’s flash was broken because the last few times I tried it – it didn’t work – so that’s why this photo’s lighting isn’t very good.  The odd thing is that I tried it today and it works!  I’m so glad because I called the camera store and it would be less expensive to buy the same camera on Amazon than to get the built-in flash fixed.

One last tip from Pinterest for today – mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part water and mix into a paste for a great facial exfoliater!  My face really glowed afterwards!

My Old Kentucky Home

Had a great weekend!  Went 4-wheeling/gun shootin/fishin and of course photographing in Kentucky at my husband’s cousin’s cabin.  My son and his girlfriend joined us and we brought our dog “Jake” for the first time on a car trip longer than 30 minutes.  It was a 3 hour trip and he panted the entire way there.  Next time I think we need some doggie downers!  He had such a good time exploring the property and tracking all of the smells…the ride was worth it!

Here’s some of the land surrounding the cabin…

After unpacking the vehicles…I made sandwiches for them and had a huge salad for myself.  They snacked on organic cheeries/grapes/strawberries/blackberries and celery/carrots/apple with hummus.  I tried a trick with the apple that I found on Pinterest…cut the apple and put a rubber band around it so it won’t brown.

Then…it was time for the 4-wheelin fun!  We used to own 4-wheelers but sold them about 10 years ago…so it was a treat to get to ride again.  Here’s my son and his girlfriend looking like “The Terminator”…

After taking a quick ride, my husband and I went for a hike.  We walked in the glorious sunshine and stopped occasionally for me to take some photos…

We came up through the woods to find our way back to the cabin…

Then it was time for more photo fun…

I like it when people aren’t afraid of looking silly!

The porch had a lovely view of the fishing pond and was a great place to kick back!

This was calling my name….”take my picture—please”!

We did lots of target shooting!

A different perspective.

I brought along the ingredients for Se-mores…but I was good and only had a chocolate bar!  The next morning the lighting was different so I took this photo of the cabin…

We went fishing and I caught one.  This photo is of my son taken from the cabin with my zoom lens…

Jake wanted to ride in my lap for a few minutes on the drive home…

It was a wonderful weekend and we’re blessed to have our family and such a wonderful place to visit!  I hope you had  a great one too!

Down on the Farm

Last night we went to the neighbor’s house to visit and swim a bit in their pool.  They have award-winning sheep, goats, chickens, a llama, dogs and cats!

This is Ranger.  He keeps watch over the sheep!  He’s got a quirky personality…very fun!

The chickens like to “surf” as James (the neighbor) calls it!

This guy wanted a close-up shot!

He/she wanted to pose for me…

They’re wondering what all the fuss is about!

James warned me about his aggressive roosters…so I stayed behind a log while photographing!

I liked the lighting in this shot…the light green grass against the dark green leaves.

Here’s one of the cats after having some cat nip…

If you ever get tired of looking at real sheep…how about a “decoy”!

Heading home…here are our views down the gravel road 1/8th of a mile…

Lovin’ life in the country!

Loveland Farmers Market

I went to the Loveland Farmers Market yesterday.  Don’t you just love the name of that town…”Loveland”!  Anyway, I bought some of my most favorite bread ever–the “Bad Boy”.  Really…that’s what it’s named.  Needless to say, it’s fun ordering…”May I have a Bad Boy please?”  It’s kind of like an everything bagel, but crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.  Made locally by Blue Oven Bakery in Williamsburg, Ohio, in a wood fired oven –it’s heavenly!

I also made an easy new “healthy” recipe last night.  It’s 1/2 cup of cooked chicken (I put a little olive oil in a pan, cut the chicken tenderloin into 1/2 inch pieces, and cooked it on the stove for about 10 minutes), 3 tablespoons of a sweet apple cut into small pieces, 2 tablespoons of red grapes cut into small pieces, and 1 tablespoon of honey on a large Romaine lettuce leaf.  You just eat it like a taco.  Surprisingly, my husband even liked it.  The honey gave a sweetness so you didn’t feel like you needed dessert.  I served a piece of the bread (buttered) along with it…so yummy!

I couldn’t resist bringing home a bouquet of flowers (including sunflowers) from the market and some lovely homemade soap (made with 6 oils)…

I jogged almost 3 miles yesterday morning and after dinner, my husband and I hiked 3 miles.  I took a shower and used my new soap before bed…it made my skin feel so soft…loved it!  Slept like a baby!  Hello Morning!  It feels good taking care of yourself!!

A Day in the Country

I had a nice day hiking with my husband at Stonelick State Park, which is located North of Cincinnati and only 20 minutes from our home.  We got a late start–about noon–so it was really hot and humid.  Here are some photos from the hike…

We had fun playing Tarzan on a vine…

He got a little close…

There was an antique machinery show at the Park…so after our 4 mile hike we checked out all of the cool stuff!  I really enjoyed talking to this guy–his name is Jack Miller and he does custom forging–the old fashioned way–a real “blacksmith”.  I would love to learn to make things either by welding or this way.

Here are some of his wares…but he also makes decorative pieces.

I’m not really into antiques, tractors, or old cars…but some of these were really unique…

This is an orchard tractor.  The sides are shielded to protect them from tree branches, etc.

I loved this Studebaker and the attached little camper.  I had checked into buying one of these…I could pull it behind my little honda…sleep in it…it has a fridge & cooktop.  So cute!

To top off the day we had a bite to eat.  I usually eat really healthy…like sprouted whole grain bread, salads, oatmeal smoothies, etc., but I had a cheese (artificial–I think) steak hoagie, Pepsi, and deep fried Oreos!  The Oreos were really good…but now I’m paying for it–sore tummy!!

Hope your day was great!!

The Ashe Keeper

A few weeks ago I took my mother’s ashes to the cemetery where my Aunt (her sister) is buried and spread them on her grave.  My mother died a year ago from Cancer at the age of 78.  She was one of eleven children born into poverty and she was closest to this sister.

My father passed away in 2006 from Cancer, my grandfather (his father) passed away in 2004 (at the age of 100) from old age, and my father’s mother passed away in the 1980’s at the approximate age of 80.  At one point, I had all of their ashes.  A few years ago I took their ashes to the Voice of America Park in West Chester (Cincinnati), Ohio and found a spot down a road without anyone around to sprinkle them.  The reason I chose the Voice of America Park was because my Grandfather had been one of the first engineers with them over in Germany in the 50’s.  He and my Grandmother probably would have preferred being spread in Germany, but I didn’t know when I would make it back there.  I was stationed there when I was in the Army back in the late 70’s.

My Grandfather led a very motivated life…was a talented Violinist in addition to his career as an Engineer, and other interesting endeavors/inventions.  If you’d like to read more about him, I have a post here that I wrote over a year ago.

Anyway, back to my Mother.  She believed she had a ghost that lived with her for about 10 years, until she moved in with me back in 2008.  She had some ghost detection people come out and spend the night to see if they could pick up anything with their equipment, and they did register some activity.  She told me before she passed, that if I felt something brush against me, that it would be her.  A few weeks after she passed, I was sitting here at my computer and felt something brush against my leg.  I didn’t think anything of it, just took my hand to brush at the spot.  Well…it happened again and then it dawned on me.  Have any of you had experiences with ghosts?

Back to her ashes.  I’m sure that cemeteries have a rule against doing what I did, but I couldn’t think of a place my Mother would have rather been.  I asked her before she died and she said to keep her for a while and then put her where I thought best.  Having never visited my Aunt’s grave (she died when I was nine years old), I found online what Section she was in and the general location.  This particular cemetery is very large, so once I parked by the Section, it took about 20 minutes of walking around to find her grave.  Some grounds employees drove by me in a golf cart and I tried to keep her bag of ashes cradled in my arm, so they wouldn’t stop to investigate.  I have two brothers, but I’m not in contact with one of them and the other one hasn’t asked about her ashes, so I didn’t think he’d be interested in accompanying me.

I also would like to be cremated.  I think it’s a waste of space and money to put dead people in expensive boxes and bury them.  When I die, I’d like people to celebrate my life if there is a funeral.  Make it a party!

What fun looks like in your 40’s and 50’s

Since I’ve been back from Africa…a lot has been going on.  Some of it is personal and heavy-duty–so I can’t talk about it.  But most of it has been FUN!

This was my friend April’s (on the left) boat christening party.  She’s amazing!  She just finished 1st in her age group in a triathlon.

I really enjoyed this 4th of July pool party.  That’s me on the right with the hat on.  I didn’t know most of the people…but its good to get out and meet new friends!

This was at an outdoor concert in a suburb of Cincinnati called “Blue Ash”.

Downtown Cincinnati with friends…

The wine tasting meeup.com organization I belong to had an event at the Art Museum…

Its been really hot here, so I’ve been to the neighbor’s pool, my girlfriend’s pool, and to the beach at Eastfork Lake.  Lots of other fun events like a Reds Game, bicycling 20 miles on the Loveland Bike Trail, jogging almost every day, hiking, and trying new recipes that I find on Pinterest.

Like, Spinach Orzo, Shrimp Tacos, and fresh peaches, lemonade and vodka in a blender!

Tonight after jogging or hiking (can’t decide which one to do) I’ll try a Blackberry Margarita…yum yum!!

Hope you’re having a fantastic summer (or whatever season it is where you are)!!

Listening to your Heart

I’ve decided not to go on the six-week European trip.  Instead, I’m going to get a job and spend more quality time with my husband.  I’ve been searching for a while now…perhaps going through a mid (or maybe later) life crisis.  Feeling that I have to fit everything in now.  I typically had jobs/careers that offered one or two weeks of vacation per year and while my son was growing up, the time was spent going to Myrtle Beach or boating/camping.  When I finally was able to travel for longer periods of time…I went a little “hog-wild”!

We’ve all heard “Balance is important in life” or “All things in moderation” and I haven’t been living my life in balance lately.  So…having recognized that, I’m now going to change it.  It’s O.K. to travel and have fun, but for me to feel fulfilled, I realize I need a purpose.  I enjoy helping people and I have a lot of interests and talents.  Instead of staying trapped in the thinking that I have to figure everything out now…I’m just going to take action and start somewhere!

Woo Hoo…Planning a trip to Europe!

I have brain pain right now!  The good kind!  I’m planning a six-week trip through 12 countries in Europe!  I’d like to visit Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Copenhagen, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungry, Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey.  The only one I’ve been to is Germany (I lived there for a couple of years back in the late 70’s).  I’m hoping to Couchsurf in some countries, stay in hostels or cheap hotels for others, and I’d love to meet some of my fellow bloggers (like I met Rory in Cape Town)!

I’m not set on these countries yet but if I purchase a Eurail pass they are the most convenient to visit.  I would get discounts on boat travel with the Eurail pass.  As many of you know, when planning a big trip like this–it’s so time-consuming.  To get the best deal, I’m flexible with my dates (hoping to leave in about a month) and with my beginning destination.  I’ve looked at flying into Oslo, Norway; Helsinki, Finland and Copenhagen, Denmark.  From Helsinki I’d like to take a fast ferry to Tallinn, Estonia (2 hrs.) and spend a day there.  Also from Helsinki there is an overnight ship through either Silja or Viking Cruise Lines to Stockholm, Sweden.  And…of course in Norway the Fjords are at the top of my list!!  Air travel is quite inexpensive between some of the European cities also.  Less than $100 to fly from Bergen, Norway to Berlin!

So…my itinerary could be fly into Helsinki..stay a couple of nights..take a day trip to Estonia..take the overnight cruise to Stockholm..stay 2 or 3 nights…take a train to Oslo, Norway..stay 2 nights..take the scenic train & fjord cruise to Myrdal..Flam..Gudvangen.. bus to Voss..train to Bergen.  Fly to Copenhagen..trains on to Berlin, Prague, etc.

Or…fly into Copenhagen…stay 2 or 3 nights..take the train to Stockholm..stay 2 or 3 nights..take overnight cruise to Helsinki..stay 2 nights and do day trip to Estonia..fly from Helsinki to Oslo where I start the itinerary listed above onto Bergen…then fly from Bergen to Berlin, then trains onward.

Or…fly into Bergen…reverse the fjord & train itinerary to Oslo..stay 2 nights..train to Stockholm..stay 2 or 3 nights…overnight cruise to Helsinki…stay 2 nights with day trip to Estonia…fly from Helsinki to Copenhagen…then trains onto Berlin, Prague, etc.

Whew!  I was allotting at least 30-35 days for all of the countries except for Turkey, where I would stay in Istanbul for 3 nights — then possibly see Cappadocia (where the fairy chimneys are) — and for sure the Mediterranean shore, called the Turquoise Coast, in the area of Fethiye.  I’d love to hike a few miles along the Lycian Way (500 km) which is located on the coast.

I would be traveling solo…and thinking I won’t plan everything this time…to let the universe do its magic!  So if anyone would like to meet up…let me know!!

Former Slave Market site in Zanzibar

While I was exploring Stone Town on the Island of Zanzibar, Tanzania, I walked by The Anglican Christ Church Cathedral…

and saw that it was the former slave market site.  It was only a few dollars to view it and there were a number of guys standing around offering to give tours, so I asked one of the men how much he charged.  He said he worked for tips…whatever I wanted to give…so off I went for a tour!

The tour lasted about 20 minutes.  First we walked through the church and he explained that since slavery had been abolished in the States in 1863 and it wasn’t abolished in Zanzibar until 1873, for those 10 years, the slaves were shipped to other countries other than the U.S., such as Dubai and other Middle Eastern countries.  While researching for this post, I found information that is contrary to what my tour guide gave.  Actually, slavery wasn’t completely abolished in the U.S. until 1865 and in Zanzibar until 1897.  There was a treaty signed with Britain to suppress slavery in Zanzibar in 1873.

This is the interior of the church…

Here is an underground area where the slaves were kept.  The guide said as many as 50 women and children were in this one room where they slept.  This area had a palatable sadness.  Seeing the shackles and trying to imagine living in these conditions left an imprint!

The last country in Africa to abolish slavery was Niger in 1960.  Even then it wasn’t illegal until 2003.  From 1960 until 1981 slavery was abolished in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Mauritania, respectively.  I was surprised by this.

Although slavery is illegal in all nations, it still exists, or forms of it, throughout the world!
